Leon's newsletter Issue 08

Outdoor living is five years behind self-checkout.

Self-checkout retrained how people shop everywhere else. Leon on why your online showroom needs to work the same way, so buyers can design, see, and price their pergola, veranda, or garden room without ever picking up the phone.

Remember the first time you used a self-checkout till?

It felt weird. You probably got something wrong and had to wave someone over.

Now? You avoid the lane with a person in it. You just want to scan your stuff and go.

That didn’t happen because supermarkets got lazy. It happened because we all got impatient. We don’t want to wait. We don’t want to explain ourselves to anyone. We want to do it ourselves, our way, right now.

Your buyers feel the same way#

Here’s what most outdoor living businesses haven’t caught up to yet.

Your customers feel exactly the same way about buying a pergola, a veranda, a garden room or any other product.

They don’t want to fill out a contact form, just to get a call from sales and then wait a week for a price. They don’t want to describe their garden on the phone. They don’t want to book a site visit just to find out the price was never in their budget.

They want to build it themselves. See it. Get the price. Decide.

Same as the self-checkout.

Retail worked this out years ago. Self-checkout, kiosks, smart carts. Walk into a shop today and most of it runs without you ever speaking to a soul. The businesses that moved early didn’t just cut costs but they sold more. When people move at their own pace, with no one hovering and no queue to wait in, they buy with more confidence.

Outdoor living is a good five years behind on this.

Most businesses still run on contact forms, manual quotes, and phone calls to book visits. That’s like having 20 checkout lanes and keeping 19 of them closed.

The customers are there, the demand is there.

They just don’t want to wait in your queue.

Your showroom is the self-checkout#

Your online showroom is your self-checkout.

The customer picks the product, chooses the size, the colour, the add-ons. Then sees the product in 3D, and gets a branded quote in seconds. Hits submit already knowing exactly what they want.

And here’s where it beats the supermarket. A self-checkout only lets people pay faster. Your showroom lets them see their dream before they buy it. They watch their own pergola take shape in their own garden. Nobody who does that walks away cold.

The businesses winning right now are the ones that gave their buyers the self-checkout before anyone else did.

The ones still emailing a PDF three days later are losing jobs they’ll never even know they lost.

P.S. Curious what your self-checkout would look like with your own products in it? Book a call and we will show you one built for a business like yours.
