I spend most of my week inside the 3D models that sit behind outdoor living configurators. Pergola slats moving as the buyer drags an angle. Veranda glazing rebuilding when a sliding door swaps for a fixed pane. Garden room cladding redrawing when the timber colour changes. Carport posts adjusting span for a van. Fence panels repeating along a frontage the buyer typed five seconds earlier.

The categories that respond best to visual selling are not the ones that look prettiest on a brochure. The brochure-friendly ones are often the worst configurator candidates. The boring, structural ones, that took a salesperson two evenings to spec by hand, are the ones where a configured 3D quote earns its keep on day one.

Below are the five where that pattern is strongest, and the structural reason each one closes better when the buyer builds it themselves.

1. Pergolas#

Pergolas are the textbook case. The reason is not that they are visually impressive, although they are. The reason is that the buyer is choosing between visual outcomes, not functional specs.

Ask a pergola buyer what they want and they will say “something that works for the patio.” Show them a renderer that toggles between anthracite and oak posts, louvered and fixed roofs, 3 by 4 metres and 4 by 5, and they will spend twelve minutes inside it. The functional decision is made by minute three. The remaining nine minutes are aesthetic, and aesthetic is what the buyer cannot resolve from a printed page.

The geometry helps. A pergola is parametric in the cleanest possible sense. Change the width, the post count and beam span recompute. Change the roof type, the shading on the patio below redraws. None of that is hard to model. What is hard is the rule library underneath, the part that knows a louvered roof at 4.5 metres needs reinforcement, and that a particular screen colour is only allowed when the structure is anthracite. That is the category knowledge a real pergola configurator carries on day one.

2. Verandas and sunrooms#

Verandas and sunrooms read like cousins of the pergola, but the buyer’s question is different. With a pergola, the buyer asks what it looks like. With a veranda, the buyer asks whether it fits.

The decision is spatial. Will it sit flush against the back wall. Will the roof line clear the upstairs windows. Where do the sliding doors land. A photograph of a similar veranda on a similar house does not answer those questions. A 3D model parked on a clean plot, with the buyer’s stated dimensions, answers all of them in about thirty seconds.

The configurable variables are also more numerous. Roof pitch, glazing type, door system, side panel infill, wall mounting versus freestanding, optional integrated heating or lighting. A pergola configurator has roughly twelve decisions. A veranda configurator has closer to twenty-five. Too many for a paper spec sheet. Spread across a 3D model with sensible defaults, the same twenty-five take eight minutes and feel like a guided tour.

In the data, veranda buyers spend longer in the model than pergola buyers and configure further down the option tree before submitting. The completed designs look more like architectural drawings than mood boards. That matches the buyer’s underlying question, which is closer to “is this an extension of my house” than “is this a feature in my garden.”

3. Garden rooms#

Garden rooms are the category where the configurator quietly does the most work, because the buyer is committing to something permanent.

A pergola sits in the garden. A garden room is the garden, for the next twenty years. It is a small building with insulation, electrics, a floor, a roof, and a door. The price reflects that. So does the buyer’s caution. Garden room shoppers do not impulse-buy. They open a configurator, exit, come back two weeks later, configure again, save the spec, come back a third time, and only then ask for a call.

That long, returning consideration window is what the configurator has to support. The renderer has to load the saved configuration. The PDF has to look like a building document, not a flyer. The price has to be specific, not “starting from.” The rules have to encode what a garden room really is: electrics tied to door positions, insulation tied to wall thickness, footprint tied to base preparation. Skip any of those and the buyer notices on visit three and quietly disappears.

The underlying pattern is the return visits. 475 people entered the configurator, 167 designed their garden room, and the funnel converted at 35 percent from lead to inquiry. The brochure gets opened once.

The most important detail in a garden room model is not the building. It is the ground. A room floating on a perfect green lawn looks fake. The same room set on a paving slab, in the buyer’s chosen timber, in late afternoon light, looks real. Buyers commit to real.

4. Carports#

Carports are where the configurator stops being aesthetic and starts being structural.

A carport has one job: fit a vehicle. Or two. Or a van plus a small trailer, plus enough clearance to open both doors without scraping the post. The buyer arrives knowing exactly what needs to park under it, and they need the model to tell them whether the structure will physically clear the vehicle they typed in.

That changes the geometry from descriptive to verifying. A pergola renderer can be a touch generous with proportions and the buyer forgives it. A carport renderer cannot. If the configurator shows a structure that fits a Transit van, and the delivered structure does not, the install crew has a Monday morning they will remember all year. The rules library has to be exact. Beam heights, ridge clearances, post placement against drive widths, all encoded against the real structural product, not a stylised approximation.

The payoff is that a carport configurator turns a category that took a sales rep two evenings to spec into a self-service flow. Armat ran +40 percent revenue in three months on carports with no new hires, because the spec work was now done by the buyer, and the team only quoted the configurations that came in fully built.

Carport models are unforgiving in a way that keeps the renderer honest. Every other configurator I touch is a little better for it.

5. Fences#

Fences are the surprise on this list. They look like the category least suited to 3D selling, and they end up being one of the strongest.

The geometry is repetitive by design. A fence is one panel, copied along a line, sometimes turning a corner, sometimes stepping up a slope. No spatial drama, no aesthetic agonising, no twenty-five decisions. The buyer types a length, picks a panel style and colour, and the configurator builds it.

The reason it works is the buyer is solving for scale, not for feature. Fence buyers want to see what 42 metres of a specific panel looks like along their actual frontage, before they spend the four to nine thousand euros it costs. A brochure shows one panel and asks them to multiply. The multiplication is where the buyer freezes. A 3D renderer that lays out the run, in the right colour, against a clean plot or a satellite image, does the multiplication for them.

The case behind this pattern is Impol, which moved from 50 fence inquiries a year to 700 once the configurator went live. A 14x increase from a category nobody thought needed a 3D model. The lesson: visual selling is not about visual products. It is about the buyer needing to see something they cannot picture from words and materials.

The technical work behind a good fence configurator is mostly about not breaking. Rendering 100 panels smoothly on a phone, on a 4G connection, is harder than rendering one complex pergola. Frame rate has to hold. Geometry has to be instanced. None of that is buyer-facing, but if any of it is wrong the buyer drops the model on panel 37 and walks.

The pattern across all five#

Five categories, five reasons the configurator earns its keep, one shared pattern. Each product carries a ticket above 5,000 euros. Each is a one-time purchase. Each has between twelve and forty configurable variables. Each has a buyer who has never owned one before, and cannot fill in from past experience what the brochure leaves out.

The configurator does not invent demand. The demand is already there. What it does is move the buyer further down the funnel before they ever speak to a seller. The price is known. The spec is locked. The visual is resolved. The first conversation starts where the third or fourth used to.

On the seller side, the change shows up in the Monday inbox. Less weekend quoting. More time on the buyers who already configured. A close rate that drifts from the category average of 5 to 8 percent toward the 10 to 20 percent we see across sellers running configured funnels.

Fences look like the odd one out, but the numbers say otherwise. The fencing category at Impol went from 50 inquiries a year to 700 once the buyer could lay out their run, pick the panel style, see it rendered along their actual frontage, and get a price. The geometry is repetitive, the configuration rules are simple, and the buyer wants to see the line before they sign the order. The pattern still works.
